Why do elderly get fungal infections?

Asked 2 years ago

Hi, my mom is 70 years old and she's starting to struggle with fungal infections in her toenails. She never used to have this problem when I was younger. I don't understand why this is suddenly happening? I've started treating her fungal infections with tea tree foot soaks and I've instructed the nurse to do the same, but I'm worried it that it may not be enough.

The elderly are more prone to fungal infections mainly due to reduced blood flow since they may not be as active as they used to be. Their toenails also grow out slower than they used to, giving fungal infections more time to take hold. Another risk factor of nail fungus is diabetes and you should have your mother's blood sugar checked. Tea tree oil foot soaks are effective against fungal infections and you could also try apple cider vinegar soaks.
