How much zinc should I take for an enlarged prostate?

Asked 2 years ago

Hi, I was told I should take zinc to prevent the prostate gland from swelling any further. Does anyone here know how much I should be taking? Just so that you know, I have made an appointment with the doctor, but I've been placed on a waiting list.

The recommended amount of zinc is 15 milligrams (mg) per day. You can get this from seeds (pumpkin or sesame seeds) or from nuts, oysters or beans. You can also choose to take a zinc supplement in which case zinc citrate would be the most preferred form of supplementation.

Zinc has been found to have a healthy effect on the prostate. This is due to the anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant effect that zinc has. The recommended daily allowance for zinc in adult men is 11mg per day and the intake should not exceed 40mg daily. A high intake of supplemental zinc has been associated with the very problems you're trying to avoid, so it's advisable to stick to the recommended intake.
