What will a nail biopsy show?

Asked 2 years ago

Hello, my nails have been lifting from the nail bed and splitting. I initially thought it was a nail fungus, but now I'm worried it could be something worse. Should I go in for a nail biopsy? Will it be painful?

A nail biopsy would be useful in finding out what ails your nail. If not a fungus, it could be anything from melanoma to psoriasis to a benign tumor. A nail biopsy can be painful and uncomfortable, with the pain taking anywhere from a few days to a week to subside. However, it's not the only diagnostic procedure available and a visit to your doctor should provide you with the available options for diagnosis.
