What is the difference between vascular dementia and dementia?

Asked 2 years ago

A doctor told me that my wife (50) has vascular dementia. What does this mean, and what is the difference between this and regular dementia?

Dementia is a memory disorder described as a set of symptoms relating to difficulties thinking or accomplishing basic tasks, problem solving or issues with language. Vascular dementia is caused by damaged cells that result in blood supply loss to the brain.

Dementia is a slow decline in brain functionality due to age whereas vascular dementia is a decline in mental ability due to physical damage caused by blood vessel damage. Same symptoms, different cause.
