Does bovine collagen cause heartburn?

Asked 2 years ago

My sister recently started taking bovine collagen supplements for her skin. However, she started experiencing really bad heartburn shortly after her first time taking it. Is this a side effect of bovine collagen?

Yes, heartburn is a common side effect of taking bovine collagen, along with bloating, constipation, headaches and fatigue (in some people). Bovine collagen causes digestive issues in some people because it has larger protein molecules. These take time for the stomach acid to break down and digest, compared to say sugar or carbohydrates. To ease this, she can take plenty of water and avoid lying down or sitting too long after taking the bovine collagen.
