It's pretty common among drivers to zone out while driving. You might find yourself so occupied by other things like the music playing or the plans you have on the weekend that you don't notice the signs on the road. This is an example of highway hypnosis

What Is Highway Hypnosis?

Highway hypnosis is a phenomenon that causes drivers to go into a trance-like state that could last for a few miles or even the entire journey. You usually won't realize that it has happened until you snap out of it.

Highway hypnosis is often confused with driving while drowsy, but they are different. Driving while drowsy slows down your reflexes; however, during highway hypnosis, a slight external stimulant jolts you out of the trance-like state. Even though drowsy driving is a great concern, you should avoid highway hypnosis and pay full attention to your environment while driving.

How to Avoid Driving While Tired

  1. Get a good night's rest
  2. Try to avoid driving late at night Nighttime is usually when your body is accustomed to sleeping so that you might be less alert.
  3. Drink caffeine Coffee, or any other caffeinated drink, is usually a quick fix depending on your existing caffeine tolerance.
  4. Maintain good posture Good posture can keep you alert and prevent you from drifting.
  5. Try a different route It is easier to drift off when you're on a route you're already familiar with. A new route would force you to keep alert and pay attention to the road.
