Can lack of sleep shrink your brain?

Asked 2 years ago

Is it true that your brain can shrink if you do not get enough sleep? Hence why your cognitive function becomes more impaired when you haven't slept?

Insomnia, the clinical name for lack of sleep, does in fact cause brain atrophy. Your brain needs to rest after regulating bodily functions and lack of sleep means it stresses itself out and overworks itself, leading to atrophy. Numerous studies show repeatedly that insomniacs have a significant reduction in brain size or temporal lobe size during testing.
