Yes, in cases of both physical trauma and psychological trauma such as PTSD can cause the brain to shrink. When trauma is untreated the brain begins to shrink slightly as a self defense mechanism to prevent further damage due to trauma, and the effects of this are seen or experienced within 11 months of the trauma.
