Does alcohol shrink your brain?

HI, my sister was diagnosed with brain atrophy, and she has always been a heavy drinker. Could she suffer this brain damage from all the alcohol she has consumed in her life?

Oh definitely yes. Alcohol affects the brain by directly going to work on nerve cells, its how you get drunk after all, and too much alcohol can directly affect your brain and reduce its function. When your brain is impaired with so much alcohol, it doesn't quite remember how to function properly so it shrinks as a response as nerve cells die due to alcohol death.
