What is the life expectancy of someone with frontotemporal dementia?

Asked 2 years ago

My mom is 85 years old and has been diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia. The doctor has given us anti-depressants to treat the symptoms and said there is nothing else they can do. How long can we expect her to live, and is there anything extra we can give her to slow down the progression?

The rate at which this memory disorder progresses varies greatly from person to person. Life expectancy ranging from less than two years to up to ten years or sometimes more. Research shows that an average life expectancy of around six to eight years is the norm.

Unfortunately, no treatments of any kind really exist to treat or slow FTD. The best you can do is antidepressants to lessen the impact.

Semantic Dementia's life expectancy was measured in a median survival aspect of around 8 to 12 years. This was done with a low sample size and restrictions on patients. The overall survival rate varies from person to person though, so it all depends on the individual in question.
